Meet Liquid Glass

Meet Liquid Glass

Every year there are some WWDC videos worth watching, even if you aren’t a developer. This year, Meet Liquid Glass should be required viewing for anyone who cares about Apple’s operating systems.

This video shows in great detail how Apple has considered the interaction and interface of Liquid Glass with the operating systems, and it offers their suggestions on how developers should think about its use.

I love hearing designers talk about their work. I know it can be too much for some, but I find it fascinating to hear people describe the thought processes and ideas that result in digital or physical manifestations—and that’s exactly what this video provides.

I understand why some people are nervous about such a significant change coming (especially to iOS), but I think the examples in this video present a clear vision and an end result. I believe it’s best to judge the quality of the interface based on what is shown here, rather than what’s shipping in beta 1. I’m choosing to take Apple at their word that the goal is to ship something as high-quality as what they’re showcasing.

I think the video demonstrates their consideration of legibility in the design, highlighting this as a key aspect of what they want Liquid Glass to enable. I also believe prioritizing beauty in design is important. Amazing animations, whimsy, and beautiful effects are aspects that initially drew many of us to Apple. These haven’t been at the forefront of OS design for a while, and seeing the inspirations they cite at the beginning of the video makes me even more excited.

I am so happy that I decided to start this blog now. I’m genuinely excited about what’s coming later this year. It feels fresh and new, which is exactly what I want.

Also, Bruno’s shirt is so nice. I love it.
