The Enthusiast Weekly — November 14, 2025

It’s been a big week for content! I wanted to start off by thanking everyone who sent me such lovely messages after listening to the episode of Cortex I recorded with Hank Green. This one really excited people, which felt great. As I mentioned already, it was such a pleasure to record with Hank, and I’m really pleased that the episode resonated with people. From the prep work, to the recording, to the editing — I put a lot of effort into this one, so I’m happy people enjoyed it. In case you’re curious, it amounted to around 13 hours of work in total.

But that’s not all! Jason and I got to record another in-person episode of Upgrade. This one was special, as it’s the first time I’ve recorded with a guest in Mega Studio — which is wild considering I’ve been working there for over five years now. When I originally signed the lease, I assumed I would be doing this more often, but it just never happened. Very pleased to have finally done it. The video version of the show is a good one to check out: we had three iPhones recording us, with Jason managing everything with Final Cut Camera and the multi-camera features of Final Cut for iPad.

This week Apple released the iPhone Pocket, and the internet released jokes in response. I couldn’t resist one myself. I understand why people find this product so ridiculous, and some of the language in Apple’s press release doesn’t help. But I can’t help but kinda love it. I’m often swept up by high-minded designer speak, so the idea of being inspired by a “piece of cloth” is just an interesting thought to me. I know I’m not alone in being intrigued by the product and the idea behind it, but I do feel like I’m on an island amongst my colleagues. I think you know me well enough by now to know that I get excited and intrigued (nay, enthusiastic) by new ideas — and I like it when Apple are weird and creative. I’ve ordered one for the content, and it arrives tomorrow. We had a really good debate about this product on Connected this week, which I recommend you listen to.

In considering all of the great shows I’m mentioning here, I would be remiss not to mention the Membership Sale we’re running at Relay right now. You can sign up for — or gift — an annual membership for 20% off the first year. You’re going to hear me talk about this a bunch over the next few weeks, but for my weekly shows, I’m essentially asking you whether you think the content is worth a dollar an episode. If you think it is, please consider becoming a member. You get bonus content and no ads. Why not check it out?

I’m going to cut it here for today. I’m on baby duty right now, and I’m convinced Sophia will wake up at any minute. Have an amazing week.
