Recaps and Reflections

I think this has been a bit of a strange week in the world of Apple. Sometimes there are topics that come up that are interesting to me, but carry with them a lot of baggage. The news of Alan Dye departing the company for Meta is one of those stories. I think we had a good conversation about this on Connected this week. There are a lot of threads to pull on with this one, and I am personally attempting to find some more nuanced opinions about the whole thing.

It’s the week of recaps! With the release of Spotify Wrapped, it encourages many other content companies to unveil their efforts — from Apple Music, to YouTube, to your favourite podcast app. In the spirit of that, I wanted to share a few things that have been pretty consistent in my year. I’m not going to go into too much detail, because I’ve already covered them in previous posts, but I will call out:

  • Kinda Funny: I would have expected my favourite gaming and media podcast network to be my number one this year — and it was. YouTube tells me I have watched/listened to nearly 1,200 episodes from them this year. Kinda Funny is basically the soundtrack to my commutes, my downtime, and my chores. For me it’s as much about the relationships between the hosts as it is the content they cover. Everything I love about podcasts.
  • The Rest is History: My most-listened audio podcast this year. I discovered them a year ago, starting with the JFK assassination episodes and leading into America in ‘68. I actually just completed a re-listen of those episodes, and they are even better to me now.
  • Jungle: I haven’t added much new music to my catalogue this year — that isn’t kids’ music — so I wanted to recommend a favourite of mine that appears every year. Jungle have such a fantastic and unique sound. The first time I ever heard this band was at the 2014 Pitchfork Music Festival in Paris. Every single person at that venue was dancing to them, whether they knew the band or not. That’s what they bring to the table.

We are in December now, so the holidays are coming. I am really looking forward to what the rest of the month will bring, and I am sure I’ll have lots of reflections to share. Have a great weekend.
