Three Narratives from the John Ternus Executive Profile
Today is September 1, 2026 — the day that John Ternus becomes CEO of Apple.
As you would assume, Apple has now updated its executives page with Ternus as CEO, along with a refreshed profile for him.
I wanted to note three narratives that I spotted in this profile that I think tell the story of the kind of CEO he wants to be, and how Apple wants to communicate this to us. All three of these are very interesting to me.
Number 1:
John has overseen hardware engineering work on a variety of groundbreaking products and was instrumental in the introduction of multiple new product lines
This feels like Apple really trying to remind us of a previous product-focused CEO. I had assumed that they would want to underscore a Jobs-like quality, and I think we’re only going to see more of that next week.
Number 2:
John has led much of the company’s focus in areas like reliability and durability, introducing new techniques that have made Apple products remarkably resilient
I would not have predicted this angle being so prominent, so I can only assume it's something that’s important to Ternus. Ultimately, it’s good for customers too — you want your computers to last. Apple has also made inroads into the repairability of its products, which I feel goes hand in hand with this.
Number 3:
He has also driven much of Apple’s innovation in materials and hardware design that have reduced the carbon footprint of its products
One of the key tenets of the Cook era was Apple making a series of environmental pledges. I am very happy to see this called out as something Ternus is interested in. We are in a time that is being marked by many tech companies turning their backs on environmental responsibility. I do not want to see Apple going in that direction.
I am so excited to be in this moment right now – being able to focus on and discuss this CEO transition at Apple. Tim Cook was CEO for the entire time I have been making my shows, so being able to talk about how this is all unfolding is deeply fascinating to me.
