Why Am I Here?
Over the last few years, the social media landscape has changed. But everyone knows this; you don’t need me to tell you. Because of that, I no longer feel like I have a homepage of my own.
For many years, that place was Twitter. It was where I told people to go to find out what I was up to, to see what I was interested in, and to read what I wanted to publish for the world to see. But now, where do I tell you to go? Instagram? Bluesky? Mastodon? Threads? None of these places feel like a space of my own, in a way I probably should never have assumed Twitter was.
“But Myke,” I hear you say, “what about your many podcasts?” That’s right, reader. I do get the opportunity to share my thoughts on the many podcasts I record and publish each week. But all of those projects are shared with others in some way.
I recently came to the realisation that many of my colleagues have a place online that is wholly their own, something they can do with as they please. I don’t have that. And I want that.
So that’s what I plan for this website to be.
I consider myself an enthusiast. That’s why I’m here in any capacity. When I started podcasting in 2010, it was because I loved technology and wanted a place to talk about it. With every podcast I’ve started, that’s always been the core motivation. I’ve never been the “expert” on any topic I talk about. I’ve always been “the enthusiast.” In any subject I cover, I consider myself closer to the audience, trying to pull the interesting thoughts and opinions out of my co-hosts.
Over time, as my experience has grown, I naturally feel that I’m more knowledgeable and opinionated than I was 15 years ago. But my nature — being enthusiastic about things — has never changed. I’m a curious person, and I care deeply about the things I’m interested in. Now, I want to have a place to share the things that catch my interest, whatever they may be.
Along the way, I also plan to make this a place where I can share what I’m doing, and what's going on in my life. I want you to be able to keep up with me, but on my own terms. I don’t want to create content to feed an algorithm, so I feel like this is probably the best way for me to express myself today.
It’s been a long time since I tried blogging. But maybe now it’s time again.
